Continue to make 3-5 shots.
1 easier to know where is the problem.
2 know the 4020 more; when and how does it make better shot.
Better with some Italian coffee fans at home.
Make 1-2 shot every single day is very difficult.
Ask Fresh which espresso beans are cheapest and suit for your machines for practicing. Get 400+g for practice ??
or Use 1 kind of coffee for long time to make everything nearly same for you to handle easier. All depends on your favour.
I always ask the grind setting and weight should be used when changing another coffee...

** Why Professional always consistent?
1- 95% above uses same coffee
2- Pro machine for more consistent shots
3- Make over hundreds shots everyday
only a really true real time fresh ground may not be happened.
This may be the point we always have best shot at home.
I never taste a better shot outside and less than 1% to have really sweet espresso except in Fresh. |

thats why many Pro Barista, set the doser very tight to do dosing.
Moving the doser many many time but each time with less coffee.
And some people DIY a screen like this :

May be time to have a much better tamper .
Later on, you seems upgrade everything soon.
Heavy tamper you have now, but not comfort to tamp?
Have you try the RB 58mm in Fresh ??
I have a tailor made 49mm for my older than me lever, no complain.

The Espro tamper sounds so expensive and not worth for xp4020, right?
The diameter of the 4020 tamper is 50.5mm.
Also, the RB is very expensive. >US$71.xx
Since my tamper is not flat bottom (a bit round and pop up), sometimes when I press down, my hand will slide aside. And the powder will get out of the PF. It is very difficult to handle.

Right now, I changed the way of dosing.
I will "dun 1 dun" the portafilter instead using tamper to "hung".
Hopefully, I will get more consistent result. |

after you tamp, there are no clumps anymore, since the grinder is mignon with quite even grind. _________________ Eureka Mignon Hahaha |
