this website has taught me a lot of about coffee, i guess it's about time to give a little back to the community.

I have personally used the Feima 600n and eureka mignon over the years and recently Versalab M3. i will do a first person review on the pros n cons of each grinder. just to give a rough idea of each device for those who are considering to get one of these.

The review will be focused mainly on ... 1) grind consistency 2) dose retention 3) hardware built 4) performance 5) just a little on the taste profile

feel free to advise more variables for the testing, cheers.

Review 1 [dose retention]
Apologize for the long wait

first let's get into dose retention , by that i mean the amount of dose that are retained in the machine from each grind.

first test is simple, 10g of beans are poured into each machine that's vacuum-cleaned and then measure the resulting yield. 2 grinds settings are being tested, drip & espresso.

-------------Feima-------Mignon----------Versalab m3
drip----------9.6g----------8.1g-----------10g
espresso-----8.5g----------5.3g-----------9.4g

importance -> the amount of grind that is being retained signify the wastage you need to clear up from grind to grind. the less retention the better.

RESULT
Feima -- the figures well demonstrate the price/quality of this machine.
Mignon -- 5.3g !? really ? that's a monster wastage. imagine you clearing out 5g each time you change a grind setting/bean
M3 -- impressive yet expected performance. note M3 produces almost 0 retention in drip grind, it's definitely a +1 for home use since we dont have rooms for multiple grinders station in the kitchen.

clearly VersalabM3 >Feima > Mignon in this department.


Extra test [micro grinds proportion]
a filter basket is used to filter out micro grinds. tested grinder setting =drip. the less % micro grind the better.

-------------------Feima--------Mignon-------M3
% micro grind----7.3%----------6.3%-------7%

RESULT

Mignon > M3 > Feima

To be honest i am quite surprised by this result. the result contradicts with my own experience that mignon produces quite a large amount of micro grinds. Anyhow, this is just a reference. Results may vary depending on how long , how hard the filter basket is shaked during the filtering.

agreed. for $1000 you cant ask for more.
and i read from other post that you can even upgrade Feima with some italy made burr, which makes it even better.

M3 is good, but like any other products , the marginal quality keeps getting slimmer slimmer as the price goes up.

Dose retention of M3 should be even lower if you know a bit of the tricks.
The grinder has a thin metal that rotates to clear out any retained grinds on the lower funnel. However, that thin metal itself would collect a bit of grinds on it. My practice is to switch on/off for once or twice before taking out the portafilter from the holder, and to "spring" the holder arms few times to shake off any attached grounds.

At the end I would use a brush to the brush the interior of the lower funnel and you could notice there's only very little retention left inside the funnel. It's so convenient.

re peter: yes. thanks for the advise.

it was reviewed entirely base on the construction of the machine without any 'technique' we could use to improve any of the data.

but yes, practically we can do some tricks to get the best out of the machines.

for dose retention do you have photo showing where are the remaining grinds? A bit surprised to see result of Mignon...
