No I mean while you press the coffee cake, is it hard or kind of soft and left a moud after you press on it.

I presume you meant the coffee cake BEFORE extraction.
It's kind of soft. I can make a mark with my little finger easily after tampering. |

the softness of the grounds can reveal some extraction problems

Yes, when I sometimes got frustrated in changing the dose(??), I'll press the after shot coffee puck for a reference point.

hm. he refers to the texture, not how hard you knocked the basket
but it seems the puck is kind of hard
