one of best water: 50 % mineral water 5gallons e.g. Bonaqua + 50% distilled water 5gallons + half - 1 tea spoon sea salt !!
I am using 0,5 micron carbon block and resin softener !!
so far ok, even drink the water without boiled.

em, I paid $ for good filters since I wanted to set up serious coffee equipment , but the supplier gave me not the $ filters.
then I imported direct from usa for some coffee friends and friends who want good filters.
In HK, if you want to set up good filters for espresso or coffee :
1- 5micron pre-filter
+ 2- EVERPURE QL3B-BH2 for lite home usage !
*** the prefilter is needed for QL filter use longer !

Since the above set up QL too $ for me.
I am using 10micron for whole house ->
1Micron for drinking water pre-filter ->
0.5 USA made carbon block (HK no more supply, I imported direct from USA) ->
resin filter for softening (scale not create easily inside the espresso machine)
Since I am using direct water into the espresso machine so I put resin before the machine.
"?X" ? , whatever - too expensive for any purpose for such quality filters they give you.
NONE NSF certified and soft plastic parts used.
if you have "?X" ? already , make sure each filter in good condition then you get a Brita Jug in Jusco or shops for softening,
then also ok for your Gaggia Classic, since it is a problem to do descaling with Gaggia Classic, softer water is recommended.

Yes, in Hong Kong we should put softener before making coffee...
Chlorine, Iron and Scale should be the biggest problem of HK tap water.
***Gaggia Classic , if only follow the Gaggia instruction to do the descale the boiler, after done , there are tiny scale chips keep coming out from the boiler, so , it is better to use softened water to brew espresso. I am not sure it is good to PID the machine to have better temperature.* Other topic sorry...
What filters are you using now ? I try my best to find best and best $ solutions for you.

Diamond, wow you are a very rich person.
I would safe this for good coffee beans.
em... standard 10" height GAC or Block are one of best choices + Brita also very good.
Anyway, Dton + Brita is ok too.

both CHings are very rich,
Em, there are 2 parts 1- purifier and 2- electronic parts to make Ph valued water. these 2parts you can change.
*** 1 purifier, depends on the quality of your home water supply; pipes conditions. Follow the PAN instruction to change the filter once 6-12months roughly I guess in HK. Ph parts also has a certain period of time that you should change this.
Ph7 should be the most ideal acid / alkaline value to brew coffee.
upon to this, HK water supply department provides ph7 to <7.5 in these years, that's why I say above we only need a good filter for Chlorine and Scale.
***Pan is a good filter too, of course, you need change the filter and acid/alkaline filter on time.
***By the way, Resin filter also recommend for Gaggia kind machine due to the boiler design .. Brita jug + Pan TK-7585E or other filters which can get from market normally.

Chlorine + Iron makes no good favor to your coffee.
Scale etc things , if you think your machine no scale created up or no problem to the boiler ... all depends on you.
my poor water / filter knowledge from coffee study.
coffee to me are more than 95% is water, this theory makes me believe water as same important as coffee freshness.
